Terms of Service

1. The service

FaceDetective is a search tool. You upload an image and we query publicly accessible sources for visually similar images, returning links, titles, thumbnails and similarity values. The service is a research and information tool only.

Results are automated estimates produced by statistical models. A similarity value is a probability indicator, not an identification, a confirmation of identity, or a statement of fact about any person. You are responsible for verifying anything you rely on.

2. Eligibility and account

• You must be at least 18 years old and legally able to enter into this agreement.
• You must provide accurate registration details and keep your credentials confidential.
• You are responsible for all activity under your account.
• One person or entity per account; accounts may not be shared, resold or transferred.

3. Permitted use

You may use the service for lawful purposes, including checking where your own images appear, protecting your own identity and reputation, verifying whether a profile you are dealing with uses stolen or synthetic images, and legitimate due diligence permitted by the law that applies to you.

4. Prohibited use

The following are strictly prohibited and are grounds for immediate termination without refund:

• Stalking, harassing, threatening, intimidating, doxxing or surveilling any person.
• Uploading images of minors, or searching for a minor.
• Any use for employment, credit, insurance, tenancy, education eligibility or any other decision covered by consumer reporting or background screening laws.
• Any use that requires a licence or authorisation you do not hold.
• Discrimination or targeting of individuals or groups on the basis of protected characteristics.
• Circumventing technical protections, scraping the service, automating access, reselling results or reverse engineering any part of the platform.
• Downloading, extracting, screenshotting or otherwise capturing protected or obscured previews, or attempting to bypass the unlock mechanism.
• Uploading unlawful content, or content you have no right to submit.
• Republishing our results as a public dossier about an identifiable person.

You confirm that you have the legal right to submit each image you upload and that your use complies with all laws applying to you, including data protection and biometric privacy laws. You are solely responsible for your searches and for what you do with results.

5. Not a consumer reporting agency

FaceDetective is not a consumer reporting agency and its output is not a consumer report. It must never be used to determine eligibility for employment, credit, insurance, housing, tenancy or any similar purpose. If you need information for such a decision, use a lawfully authorised provider.

6. Free scans and paid unlocks

• A free scan runs the search and shows a preview of the matches found.
• A paid unlock reveals the full report, or in the case of the lifetime product, unlocks every report on your account.
• Prices are shown before purchase and include any taxes stated at checkout.
• Paid access is a licence to view results for your own use; it does not transfer any rights in the underlying content.
• Products, prices and feature scope may change; changes do not apply retroactively to a purchase already made.

Because each scan consumes irreversible search and compute costs at the moment it runs, purchases are final. See the Refund Policy.

7. Availability and accuracy

The service is provided on an as-is and as-available basis. We do not warrant that results are complete, accurate, current or fit for a particular purpose, that any specific image will be found, or that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free. Coverage depends on third-party sources that change without notice, and private, deleted or paywalled content cannot be found by any tool.

To the extent permitted by law, all implied warranties are excluded.

8. Third-party content

Results link to pages operated by third parties. We do not control, endorse or take responsibility for that content, and thumbnails remain the property of their respective owners. If you believe a result is unlawful or infringing, use the removal request process.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive or exemplary damages, nor for lost profits, lost data, reputational harm, or any decision you make based on results. Our total aggregate liability for all claims is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or fifty US dollars.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Where mandatory consumer law gives you rights that cannot be limited, those rights are unaffected.

10. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the operator, its owners and its personnel against any claim, loss, liability, damage or cost, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your use of the service, from any image you upload, from your breach of these terms or from your breach of any law or third-party right.

11. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your access immediately and without notice where we reasonably believe you have breached these terms or the Acceptable Use Policy, where use presents a legal, security or abuse risk, or where required by law. Termination for a breach does not entitle you to any refund. You may stop using the service and delete your account at any time.

12. Intellectual property

The platform, its software, models, interface, design, wording and brand are owned by the operator and protected by intellectual property law. You receive a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the service as intended. You retain the rights you already hold in images you upload, and you grant us only the licence needed to process them to deliver your search and to store your reports.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top reflects the current version, and material changes will be notified before they take effect. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

14. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States, without prejudice to mandatory consumer protection rules of your country of residence. The courts located in the United States have jurisdiction, except where mandatory law grants you the right to bring proceedings locally. Before any formal proceedings, contact legal@facedetective.io so we can attempt to resolve the matter directly.

15. General

• If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in force.
• Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it.
• You may not assign this agreement; we may assign it as part of a merger, acquisition or reorganisation.
• These terms, together with the policies linked from them, form the entire agreement between us.
